Even a beautiful kitchen can work against your healthy habits if it’s not designed with intention. Here are the five most common design mistakes that make it harder to eat well and how to fix them.

1. Cluttered Worktops

The problem: Lack of clear prep space discourages cooking and encourages snacking.

The fix: Prioritise built-in storage and keep counters reserved for active tools, fresh produce and essentials.

2. Poor Lighting

The problem: Dim or overly harsh lighting makes food prep stressful and unpleasant.

The fix: Use layered lighting, ambient ceiling lights, task lighting for worktops and warm accents to create an inviting cooking environment.

3. Hidden Healthy Food

The problem: Out-of-sight means out-of-mind. If healthy options are buried, they’re less likely to be eaten.

The fix: Use open shelving, glass jars and fridge organisers to make nutritious foods more visible and accessible.

4. Inefficient Workflow

The problem: A poorly planned layout leads to frustration, mess and takeaways.

The fix: Follow the kitchen work triangle, easy movement between sink, fridge and hob makes healthy cooking smoother and quicker.

5. No Eating Zone

The problem: If you don’t have a pleasant spot to eat, you’re more likely to eat on the go or in front of a screen.

The fix: Create a designated, clutter-free dining nook, even a small bistro table near the window can encourage more mindful meals.
